Each goat yields only about 100 grams of this precious down, which is naturally shed in the spring—onto rocks, bushes, or trees. Collected by hand, the down is then cleaned and separated from the coarse guard hairs. A single cashmere sweater requires the annual production of four to six goats—a process that explains the high value of this exquisite fiber. Only the finest fibers, distinguished by their exceptional length and fineness, make it into our collections. For our two-ply yarns, known as “Two Ply Cashmere,” we use the finest cashmere from Mongolia—a synonym for unparalleled luxury.

In addition to cashmere, we also work with the rarest and most expensive wool in the world: vicuña. This exclusive fiber, which yields only about 200 grams per animal per year, is 12 to 13 microns in fineness—even finer than cashmere, which measures 15 to 19 microns by comparison. Vicuña is one of the most sought-after materials in the world. The vicuña, a small member of the camel family, lives in the majestic heights of the Andes at altitudes of up to 5,500 meters. LANA D’ORO sources vicuña wool exclusively from controlled and legally sheared herds to ensure the conservation of this extraordinary species. Thanks to strict conservation measures, the vicuña is no longer classified as endangered. The natural coloration of vicuña wool has inspired our collections and is reflected throughout the entire LANA D’ORO color palette.
